This project explored how technology could bridge the gap between students’ everyday experiences and the science they learn in school. We designed a system that uses smartwatches to help students capture short recordings of moments from their daily lives that connect to science concepts—such as the friction experienced while riding a bike or the life cycle of flowers in a neighborhood garden. These recordings are shared with teachers, helping them connect classroom lessons to students’ lived experiences and create opportunities for more meaningful, contextualized learning.
The project was led by Dr. Sharon Lynn Chu, director of the Embodied Learning and Experience Lab, and funded by NSF Grant #1942937. Publications from this work are currently in preparation.
My primary role was designing the UI/UX for the smartwatch application, StoryLoop, and the teacher-facing portal, Contextualizer. I also developed the visual identity and branding for the interfaces and recruitment materials, and contributed to conducting studies at a local middle school.
Below is a short video overview of the project, followed by selected examples of the designs I created.
